General Discussion / AFP/A ISO Standard review - help needed
Last post by Guido Schnepp -
Hello everybody,

since this is a user-centric list, you may still have valid contacts in your address book:

I am sure you have heard of the AFP/A ISO standard 18565:2015 (title: "Document Management - AFP/Archive"). Obtaining this ISO standard was and is an important cornerstone for decision-makers in output management, which we users have of course known for many years: AFP has always been and will continue to be a valid format with regard to long-term archiving strategies. The AFP Consortium and all the manufacturers represented in it have proven their promise of stability and their willingness to cooperate sufficiently over more then fifteen years already. To maintain this position, it was nevertheless important to put this ISO standard on top.

All ISO standards are systematically reviewed, usually every five years after publication. This time is now for AFP/A or ISO 18565:2015. There is little time left to let the candidates of the standards group from as many countries as possible renew their vote on this standard to keep AFP/A alive. To keep our world alive ;-)  This is not true, of course. 8) Truth is that the ISO 18565 standard helps to keep AFP in the memory of decision-makers in general. The AFP/A and all other function and interchange sets as well as the general base standard will both remain stable, be available and will be further developed by the members of the AFP consortium, for sure. For the next decade minimum.

Would you please contact a member of the ISO standards group in your country with whom you are in contact and ask him to vote on a possible renewal of ISO 18565, if any? This would help all of us a lot, I believe!

Best regards
Guido Schnepp

Site Feedback / Re: Out of office messages archived
Last post by Jörg Palmer -
Looking for something in the Archive section I see that many automatic "out of office" messages are also archived.

Could these be suppressed somehow or are there too many languages involved?

Not as an excuse, but rather an explanation, the migration process of the listserv content is semi-automatic. We tried to preserve as much of the content as ever possible. There are hundreds of out-of-office messages and return receipt messages that have been eliminated. Obviously we have overlooked some of them.

Given the nature and mostly dated validity of the listserv content we prepared the Archive board to be easily searched. It's not so much meant for reading front to back. That's why we thought this is acceptable.

It's so empty here so let me start with question or suggestion:

All content from the former AFP-L listserv has been copied under Archive. However, it seems very difficult to find a specific topic or a thread in the Archive section. Could we organize at least answers to one question into one thread?

Kind regards from Switzerland!

Sorry for the late reply, I have been absent for a couple of days.

You are right that the AFP-L Listserv content is not prepared for pleasant reading. We had long discussions what would be the best way of embracing the AFP-L Listserv content. As a matter of fact, most of the content is years old and not actively used, so to speak. This fact and the significant effort that would be needed to make the semi automatic migration process "perfect" brought us to the conclusion to put everything into one board.

We have put a lot of effort into opening all of this content to the full text search of the forum. So you can easily find out what has been said about "Acif on mainframe", to give an example. Bottom line, using the content as a reference is functional and comfortable, and it's not perfectly nice for weekend reading pleasure.
